THE PLYMOUTH SMOUTS Having discovered the name Smout in our family history I have been researching the Smouts who lived in Devon and Cornwall in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I have discovered links to Shropshire, Derbyshire, New Zealand and Canada in the process. Below is a summary of my findings. I believe there are still Smout descendants living in Plymouth and if anybody would like to contact me I am happy to share what I have found and hopefully fill in some of the gaps – particularly post-1901. |

New sign ups to the site have been disabled because of silly spammers. This aloso applies to log ins. If you want to get in touch you will have to use the contact form from now on. Soon the smout site will move to a new server and hopefully this will become less of a problem. 2010-05-22 |

Rosemary Barling from NZ checked out the Smout family tree published on this site and made the following observation: Hi Graham I believe you are my 3rd cousin twice removed according to my family tree! I was interested in news of your new website and have had a quick look at it. Re Mary Smout (nee Langson) wife of John Smout, coalminer, she actually died on 18th May 1874 age 85 years of "gradual decay of nature" I have a copy of her death certificate. Hannah Smout is the informant of the death (the address is 77 Hollwell Street which is where John and Mary's son Thomas and his family lived.) My greatgrandmother was Mary's youngest daughter Jane (age 7 in the 1841 census) who has been missed off altogether in your family tree. She married Joseph Dunton in 1854. Introduction to the Family Name Smout. (updated Jan 2, 2008)
The family name Smout is not very common in the United Kingdom. In 1998 I obtained an Internet White Pages listing, one that has combed the telephone books and and electoral rolls of the UK, and the total number of entries was 191. This listing does not appear to contain any Scottish entries, although we know of a number of people named Smout who live in Scotland.
