Thought you might be interested.

While browsing the 1881 Census for Westbury I found several families of Smouts. One of whom
lived in 'The Hermitage' which is near the centre of the village and is now owned by a
family called Greaves.

Graham,

The 1881 Census can be purchased from the Church of the Latter day Saints
and you should be able to find details on the LDS site www.familysearch.org
You can start searching by name and district and once you get into a
district you can select 'neighbours' and move from house to house. On the
off chance, I have just typed in John Smout  - Westbury and struck lucky. It
threw up two families - details below:

Village Hermitage, Westbury, Shropshire.

John Smout, Head, Grazier, Married, 43 born Westbury
Mary Smout, Wife, Married, 45, Alberbury, Shrops
Mary J. Smout, Daur, Pupil teacher, Unmarried, 15, Westbury
Richard Smout, Son, Scholar, 13, Worthen
Sarah E. Smout, Daur, Scholar, 12, Worthen
John T. Smout, Son, Scholar, 10, Worthen
Francis Smout, Son, Scholar, 9, Worthen
William H. Smout, Son, Scholar, 7, Worthen
Lucy H. Smout, Dau, Scholar, 5, Westbury
Catherine Smout, Dau, 3, Westbury
Edith E. Smout, Dau, 1, Westbury

So it looks as though John and Mary had their first child in Westbury around
1866, then moved to Worthen before returning to Westbury around 1876.

The next Smout family lived at Brook Cottages, Westbury. I can't pinpoint
these but Brook House is only a couple of hundred yards from the Hermitage.
They were:

William Smout, Head, Butcher Journeyman, Married, 40, born Westbury
Susannah Smout, Wife, 37, Worthen
John Smout, Son, Scolar, 12, Worthen
Jane Smout, Dau, Scholar, 10, Worthen
Sarah A. Smout, Dau, Scholar, 6, Worthen
William Smout, Son, 4, Worthen
Harriet Smout, Dau, 2, Westbury
Mary Smout, Dau 5w, Westbury

So the fathers, John and William were both born in Westbury (brothers?) and
moved to Worthen and back to Westbury again.

>From a previous search I know that there were more Smouts in the district
but searching from house to house takes a great deal of time - which I do
not have, at present.

Anyway, I hope that which I have found will prove helpful.

PS By choosing 'Custom Search' on the familysearch site and then 'Internatio
nal Genealogical Index' you may well find the marriages and christenings.

What is your interest in the Smout surname?

I have no personal interest in the surname. It came to my notice because I
know the people who live at the Hermitage, Westbury and while browsing the
web I typed Westbury into a search engine, saw your site and thought it
might help you if i told you what I know. Regards, Roy
