there may be a connection between the families, but I don't know the places
where all the family members lived in the UK yet.

A few more thoughts Ellen;

Although your grandfather set off from Plymouth, was he actually born there?
A great many people emigrated from Plymouth since it was a major point of
embarkation. do you know his first name and the approximate date of his
birth, and preferably, his birthplace?

There are only about 300 people named Smout that I can trace in the UK
today, it is possible that they originate from a common ancestor, but there
are a great many links in the family tree that we do not yet know.

Genius is a family tree program, not too big, and shareware too. Download
the .gen file but you will probably have to get hold of Genius somehow,
perhaps from a friend on the  internet and look at smoutdad.gen

Yes there are, and some are modern day realtions of my family. I will ask my
father if he can identify any of them. I'm just in the first stages of this
research, so things are going quite slowly at the moment.
