Saving Energy
Why save energy?
The profligate use of energy by humans is causing the world to heat up.
This is because burning fuel, coal, oil, gas, petrol releases Carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which then traps the heat from the sun- the Greenhouse Effect.
If the world gets any warmer we can expect the climate and seasons to change.
Many parts of our world will become totally uninhabitable.
The planet may change beyond recognition, polar ice caps could disappear, and glaciers in mountainous regions could melt.
The effects predicted are:
- low lying areas susceptible to flooding
- hurricanes on a regular cycle
- drought
- storms
- sea level changes
- animal and plant extinction
- sudden seasonal changes
Life will change in an unimaginable way unless action is taken to cut global warming now.
We have to cut down our use of energy.
What can we do?
We can all use energy responsibly:
- use low energy equipment - light bulbs & domestic appliances
- turn everything off at the mains when not in use (don't leave it on standby)
- drive less- drive slower - take the bus or train- walk or cycle- drive a smaller engined car
- reuse and recycle glass, paper, plastic, wood, metal
- turn down the heating to an acceptable level.
- Switch to a green energy supplier or tarrif
- generate our own power using solar, wind or water
- insulate our homes, and turn down the heat
